Introduction

We welcome you to our church website and hope you find your visit both interesting and enjoyable.

Chetwynd is a rural parish in Shropshire, that shares a united benefice with the parish of Newport with Longford; all are within the Deanery of Edgmond and Shifnal, in the Diocese of Lichfield. The ecclesiastical parish of Chetwynd is geographically divided into four portions; the eastern parish border follows the Staffordshire county boundary, the southern extends into the town of Newport with northern and western limits in detached enclaves close to Howle and Childs Ercall.

Chetwynd is an ancient parish that has record of a priest in the Domesday Book, though we are only able to confirm the names of Rectors from 1272. There have been a succession of church buildings in the locality, with the present church of St Michael and All Angels being consecrated in 1867.

Church TowerspaceThis beautiful grade II listed building is an example of the Victorian Gothic style by Benjamin Ferrey; it is built in local red sandstone with a square tower surmounted with a spire extending to 123 ft. The church boasts rich carving to the chancel screen, altar, pulpit and lectern; the stone capitals on the marble columns along the south aisle display similar fine workmanship. The eastern stained glass window depicts our Lord enthroned, surrounded by a host of angels and archangels led by St Michael; below this is an inspiring majolica tiled reredos depicting symbols of Christ's Passion. Some of these features can be picked out on the pictures below, though a visit is needed to fully appreciate them.

Ours is a friendly congregation that invites you to join us at any of the services listed below. If you would like to see the church at any other time then please contact our churchwardens, who will be pleased to arrange a visit.

    Map of Area

The two maps which you can link to open up in separate windows. Both show the position of Chetwynd. It lies about two miles north of the Town of Newport, just off the A41 (Wolverhampton/Chester road). It is a rural parish and a number of the congregation come from villages several miles away. It is within easy reach of Telford, Stafford, Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton.

    Forthcoming Events

We hope to regularly update this section.

Chetwynd Church News: July / August 2014

    Easter:
The church was beautifully decorated for Easter, when we said thank you to Olive, who has served as both church warden and treasurer for 33 years and cleaner for 32 years. The Rector presented her with flowers, a garden shrub and tokens, with our sincere thanks for her dedication and hard work. Olive sends her thanks to everyone for her gifts. The picture below shows The presentation to Olive.

    Lunch:
The lunch at Chapters on 1st June was a complete surprise for Olive who was thrilled to see so many there. Thank you to our mystery benefactor.

    Coffee Morning:
David and Sue Askin are to hold a coffee morning at their home, on Wednesday 28th May 10 12 noon, in aid of the repair fund.
The coffee morning at David and Sue Askin's home raised 450. Thanks to our hosts and all who supported this.

    Memorial Service:
This service, marking the 100th anniversary of World War I and remembering loved ones, began with tea and cakes. We were joined by the bell ringers, once they had come off duty. Relatives of the Vernon brothers were present, as were representatives of the Royal British Legion. Thank you to Sue Askin who led our service so beautifully and to Andy Parkes who gave us a fascinating talk about the memorial window.

    Repairs to the Steeple:
Work will start shortly on repairs to the church building and will run till November. Services will continue as normal. Despite the magnificent sums raised so far, we still do not have enough money to complete all the repairs on the list. Currently we are about 31,000 short, so fundraising continues: ideas and help please. The initial work will be on the spire and tower but we should be able to do some of the other repairs this year, if funds allow.
