Introduction

We welcome you to our church website and hope you find your visit both interesting and enjoyable.

Chetwynd is a rural parish in Shropshire, that shares a united benefice with the parish of Newport with Longford; all are within the Deanery of Edgmond and Shifnal, in the Diocese of Lichfield. The ecclesiastical parish of Chetwynd is geographically divided into four portions; the eastern parish border follows the Staffordshire county boundary, the southern extends into the town of Newport with northern and western limits in detached enclaves close to Howle and Childs Ercall.

Chetwynd is an ancient parish that has record of a priest in the Domesday Book, though we are only able to confirm the names of Rectors from 1272. There have been a succession of church buildings in the locality, with the present church of St Michael and All Angels being consecrated in 1867.

Church TowerspaceThis beautiful grade II listed building is an example of the Victorian Gothic style by Benjamin Ferrey; it is built in local red sandstone with a square tower surmounted with a spire extending to 123 ft. The church boasts rich carving to the chancel screen, altar, pulpit and lectern; the stone capitals on the marble columns along the south aisle display similar fine workmanship. The eastern stained glass window depicts our Lord enthroned, surrounded by a host of angels and archangels led by St Michael; below this is an inspiring majolica tiled reredos depicting symbols of Christ's Passion. Some of these features can be picked out on the pictures below, though a visit is needed to fully appreciate them.

Ours is a friendly congregation that invites you to join us at any of the services listed below. If you would like to see the church at any other time then please contact our churchwardens, who will be pleased to arrange a visit.

    Map of Area

The two maps which you can link to open up in separate windows. Both show the position of Chetwynd. It lies about two miles north of the Town of Newport, just off the A41 (Wolverhampton/Chester road). It is a rural parish and a number of the congregation come from villages several miles away. It is within easy reach of Telford, Stafford, Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton.

Chetwynd Church News: March / April 2014

    Olive Painter:
Olive has decided to retire from her post of Church Warden, Treasurer and cleaner at the end of April, after many years‘ service.  We ask everyone to join us to say thank-you to Olive at the Easter service (20th April at 9 am), at which there will be a presentation.  Any contributions towards this should be passed to Robert.
    Easter Flowers:
Olive asks that everyone who arranges flowers for Easter should do this on Good Friday, 18th April.  Should anyone wish to give a donation towards the cost of the Easter lilies, please give this to Olive Painter.

    Annual Meeting:
The Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place at 7.30pm on Monday 28th April at Chetwynd Church.  Everyone is very welcome to attend this meeting.

    Service Times:
The PCC have decided to hold an evensong service at 6.30pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month from May to September.  This will replace the morning service.  On 15th June we will be holding a special service entitled Tea, Cakes and Memories‘, which will start at 6.30pm.  This service will be a commemoration of the start of the First World War, but will also be an opportunity to remember loved ones who have departed.   Please note that the service on 6th April will commence at 9am, not the normal 11am.

    Diary Date:
28th May — coffee morning at David & Sue Askin's.
