On April 5th 2001, twenty four of us went on a small coach to Taylor's Bell Foundry and museum in Loughborough, to witness the casting of our three new Parish Church bells. The day was cold and the rain poured down, but when we arrived a pleasant pub lunch revived us and set us up for what was to come.
First we were gathered together in the museum for a talk about bells, and the history of Taylor's. Then we were shown around the various buildings and saw all the different stages in the creation and tuning of bells of all different sizes and sounds.
At about 2.30 pm we were ushered into the foundry, with its incredible industrial smell and grime, where the molten metal (copper and tin) had reached the right temperature and all was ready for the casting. From the safety of an upstairs gallery we were able to look down on the red hot molten metal being poured from a huge "ladle" into the mounds buried in a sandpit in the floor.
Altogether a great experience, and good to know that in a few months time the bells we saw cast will be ringing out their message over the village.
