The Church
St. Chad's shares a building with St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church. In 1995 it was completely refurbished and is now a very attractive modern building.

The new church of St. Catherine with St. Chad was consecrated by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham and Bishop Keith of Lichfield on 26th June 1996 and has an official sharing agreement between the two churches. At present the Roman Catholic congregation use the church for Saturday evening Mass while the Anglicans use it on a Sunday morning.

The Area
The church serves the Beechdale, which is a large close-knit post-war council estate within the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. The population is about 6,000. The ownership of the estate has recently been transferred from the local authority to the Beechdale Community Housing Association. Unemployment stands at 17% and the L.I.P. score for Beechdale is 23.66. The electoral roll stands at 57 with an average attendance of 40.

Parish Records
Historic records of St Chad (Beechdale), Blakenall Heath, have been deposited at Staffordshire Record Office, where they are available for consultation by the public. These comprise a service register 1958-1963.

A catalogue of these records is available in "Gateway to the Past" - the online catalogue of the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service. The Archive Service's website provides further information on planning a visit to the office to consult records, should you wish to do so.

What is J Gang?
A group of young people (8-16) who meet at St. Catherine with St. Chad's Church on Beechdale Estate in Walsall.

How did we begin?
In it's infancy the project had one leader and about fourteen young people meeting for 45 minutes, once a week. The youngsters approached the Church and asked to be included in what we do. We responded to their need.

What have we achieved?
The funding we have received has made an incredible difference to us. We now meet four/five times a week with 100 young people on our register; we have one part-time paid leader and eight volunteer adult helpers.
