General Information

Rushall Parish Church is situated at the foot of Leigh Road, surrounded by trees and open countryside. Take a seat and relax a while and enjoy the peace and tranquility of your surroundings, the only evidence that you are only 1 mile away from the centre of Walsall town centre is the hum of the traffic in the distance.

Most of the Parish is suburban with a population of approximately 10,000. Housing is mainly detached and semi-detached with a small amount of council and terraced accommodation.

Architecture & History

Chancel and AltarThere has been a place of worship on this site since before 1220, the font which is still in use is believed to date back to that period.

The stained glass windows show saints and scenes from the New Testament. The bells in the tower are a peel of six the tenor of which weighs 7cwt.

Our greatest treasure is the wonderful wall painting on the transept walls and chancel arch. It was painted by E. Reginald Frampton in 1905/6 showing "The praise of the Angels", the four archangels, Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and Uriel and the heavenly choir. Frampton was a popular religious painter, much influenced by Burne Jones. He painted murals in a number of churches, but only four have survived. Rushall murals are among the largest and most elaborate, they require careful and costly conservation to preserve them for future generations, and the church is attempting to raise £100,000 to carry out this work. We have produced a fully illustrated booklet which goes into greater detail of the early history, bells, organ and wall paintings, which is on sale in the church.

    Parish Records
Historic records of St Michael the Archangel, Rushall have been deposited at Staffordshire Record Office, where they are available for consultation by the public. These include the parish registers of baptisms 1686-1968, marriages 1686-1982 and burials 1771-1961.

A catalogue of these records is available in "Gateway to the Past" - the online catalogue of the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service. The Archive Service's website provides further information on planning a visit to the office to consult records, should you wish to do so.

    General Information

A small mission church was built in Rushall centre in 1887 for the then mining community, it was to have been a temporary building, but it still stands today and we shall be celebrating 120 years of worship in the "tin tabernacle" on the 11th March 2007.

It is well loved by the local community and congregation and here is what one of the congregation has to say about the church:

"Christ the King stands on the A461 Lichfield Road, at the traffic lights heading into Walsall look to your left, there you will see a building made from corrugated iron and painted red.

Each Sunday I go there to pray, I'm not of the parish but I find peace and friendliness. I always feel it is full of warm friendly, past parishioners, you can‘t see them, but they are there.

The church has served Rushall and its people for nearly 120 years, bringing spiritual hope to the local people through wars and all sorts of trials and tribulations".
