GENERAL

The parish boundaries extend from Green Lane to Dartmouth Avenue to Ryecroft Cemetery. The parish thus includes new housing developments as well as Victorian terraces near the church. There are streets of mostly light industry. Many families who have moved out of the parish nevertheless regard St. Peter's as their "Family" church and bring back their loved ones for funerals.

The church has disabled access, toilet facilities, and an installed Induction Loop system for the benefit of hearing aid users.

CHURCH BUILDING

Our church building is 172 years old this year. It was consecrated by Dr James Bowstead on Wednesday 14th April 1841.

Much of the essential works to the tower structure, identified in the 2005 Quinquennial Inspection, have now been completed. Much more work will be necessary during the coming years and further fundraising will be needed. We hope to do all this work over a period of time and our main aim is to ensure that St Peter's remains open to our community and to all who wish to come. The latest Quinquennial was carried out in June 2010.

In addition to the building works, we also need to carry out urgent remedial work to the pipe organ. Minor repairs were carried out on the pipe organ in April and July 2010 to keep the instrument in playing order until a major overhaul can be funded.

HISTORY

Part of the Reredos
ReredosSt. Peter's Church was built in the Early English style and consecrated in 1841. The rood screen separating nave from chancel was erected in 1907; the chancel was added in 1910; and in 1917 a Lady Chapel, where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. The reredos behind the High Altar is made of alabaster, with statues representing Our Lord Jesus Christ, St. Peter and St. Chad.

Other notable features of the church, which is mentioned in Pevsner, are the finely carved pulpit and lectern, the stained glass windows, the font, and the pipe organ. If you would like more information, please ask at church for a copy of the History of St. Peter's Church, a brief guide to the building.

A catalogue of these records is available in "Gateway to the Past" - the online catalogue of the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service. The Archive Service's website provides further information on planning a visit to the office to consult records, should you wish to do so.
