GENERAL

The parish boundaries extend from Green Lane to Dartmouth Avenue to Ryecroft Cemetery. The parish thus includes new housing developments as well as Victorian terraces near the church. There are streets of mostly light industry. Many families who have moved out of the parish nevertheless regard St. Peter's as their "Family" church and bring back their loved ones for funerals.

The church has disabled access, toilet facilities, and an installed Induction Loop system for the benefit of hearing aid users.

Wedding costs for 2009 are £500, including everything except flowers.

CHURCH BUILDING

Our church building is 168 years old this year. Our last Quinquennial Inspection in October 2005 identified the need for repairs and other remedial measures provisionally costed at £145,000.

The work needed includes repairs to the tower roof, bricks, turrets and parapet, lead gutter and rainwater pipe, the window guards, the roof tiles, mortar facing, masonry and lightning protection system; treatment of fungal growth, need for electrical inspection, repointing of brickwork and redecoration.

Much of the essential works to the tower structure have now been completed. Much more work will be necessary during the coming years and further fundraising will be needed. We hope to do all this work over a period of time and our main aim is to ensure that St Peter's remains open to our community and to all who wish to come.

In addition to the building works, we also need to carry out urgent remedial work to the pipe organ.

HISTORY

Part of the Reredos
ReredosSt. Peter's Church was built in the Early English style and consecrated in 1841. The rood screen separating nave from chancel was erected in 1907; the chancel was added in 1910; and in 1917 a Lady Chapel, where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. The reredos behind the High Altar is made of alabaster, with statues representing Our Lord Jesus Christ, St. Peter and St. Chad.

Other notable features of the church, which is mentioned in Pevsner, are the finely carved pulpit and lectern, the stained glass windows, the font, and the pipe organ. If you would like more information, please ask at church for a copy of the History of St. Peter's Church, a brief guide to the building.
